OptoSniff, OptoSci's unique laser sensing system, continuously measures gas concentration levels
at single or multiple points distributed along a fibre optic network. Variants of the system can be used for gas
sensing applications in landfill sites, mines, gas and petroleum installations, industrial process monitoring and
control, etc. |

Standard Features
General features of OptoSniff based systems are
- Continuous, multipoint, monitoring of single or multiple gas concentrations over the same optical fibre sensing
network
- Single unit measures from 100% down to LEL gas concentration levels without poisoning (a key drawback of pellistor
sensors)
- Detection method is self-referencing eliminating zero point drift and the requirement for re-calibration (a
particular problem with infra-red gas analysers)
- Constant output data is available at a conveniently sited central control unit for alarm notification, gas
reporting, analysis, remote access from PC, onward transmission, etc
- System uniquely tuned to gases of interest with no cross-sensitivity to other gases (another particular disadvantage
of infra-red gas analysers)
- Measurement method is independent of optical power variations (a further drawback of infra-red gas analysers)
- System designed to operate reliably even up to 90% optical power loss at sensing cell
- Low power, all optical measurement ensures intrinsic safety and immunity to electromagnetic interference at
the measurement point
- Sensor units have been designed to operate reliably and have been thoroughly tested in the hot (up to 40°C),
humid (up to 90% humidity, non-condensing), and harsh (CH4, H2S, etc)
environment experienced down in-waste wells in landfill sites.
- Potential unlimited expansion of number of sensing points through use of optical switches
- Current system has been applied to monitor methane, carbon dioxide & water vapour but the system can be
designed to measure other gases (please contact OptoSci to discuss your application)
The following datasheets provide additional details on OptoSniff and some of its potential applications. When
you have had an opportunity to review this information please contact OptoSci with your specific requirements and
we will be pleased to discuss them with you in further detail.
