Douglas Walsh is the Operations Director of OptoSci Ltd and has prime responsibility for the business management,
finances, sales and marketing in the Company and also contributes to the technical development of its products.
At OptoSci's inception in 1994, Douglas was appointed General Manager and promoted to Operations Director in 2003.
During this time he has successfully managed and directed the growth and development of OptoSci from start-up to
its position today as a leading producer of innovative optoelectronic systems, components and instrumentation for
the international education, research, industrial and environmental markets.
Douglas was born in New Ross, Ireland in 1966. In 1988 he graduated from University College Dublin with a BSc (Hons)
Degree in Physics. Following this he moved to Scotland to pursue a PhD Degree within the Electronic and Electrical
Engineering Department at the University of Strathclyde. He was awarded his PhD in 1992 for research conducted
in the field of optically actuated silicon microresonant transducers.
From 1991 to 1994 he was employed as a Senior Research Assistant within the Optoelectronics Division at the University
of Strathclyde where he participated at both research and managerial level in numerous research contracts funded
through various industrial, government and European agencies. This work included research on: optical fibre transducers,
sensing techniques for monitoring the condition of various composite and structural materials, interferometric
optical fibre sensing systems, and silicon micromachining for transducer applications. During this period he also
acted as a consultant with industry.
Dr. Walsh has published over thirty technical papers for Scientific Journals and International Conferences and
a patent application. He lives in Glasgow with his wife and three children.
