Dr Walter Johnstone was born in 1955 near Glasgow, Scotland. He completed his education at the University of Strathclyde where he graduated with a BSc.(Hons) degree in Chemical and Material Sciences in 1977 and a PhD in Laser Physics in 1982. In 1980 he joined Pilkington Optronics as a physicist/ product development engineer working on high power lasers, integrated optics, optical communications and optical sensing systems. He was promoted to Project Manager of the Integrated Optics Division in 1984. In 1985 he was appointed to the post of Development Manager at Logitech Ltd. In this role he was a full member of the company's Management Board with responsibility for all technical functions including new product development. In 1987 he returned to the University of Strathclyde where he is now a senior member of academic staff teaching communications principles, optical electronics and optical communications. His research interests include fibre optic components and systems, guided wave optical devices, lasers and optical communications. Work in these fields have led to a total of 80 technical publications and 3 patent applications. Dr Johnstone is also a founding director of OptoSci Ltd which was established in 1994 with the primary objective of exploiting innovative optical technologies developed within Strathclyde University. Specific products being brought to the market include fibre cavity lasers, a range of optoelectronic instrumentation and a number of optical and fibre optic educator kits. |
